Dear NYC Charter Schools ELL Consortium,
We are formally inviting you to our 1st NYC Charter Schools’ ELL Consortium sponsored workshop for this school year. The title of the workshop is: Writing is Thinking for ELL - Session 1
Description: This workshop presents an approach to identifying high leverage skill gaps in students’ writing; to explicit instruction in sentence-level strategies that close those gaps and develop content knowledge, vocabulary, and reading comprehension simultaneously; and to tracking and monitoring student progress. The approach also teaches English learners how the English language works. This is a hands-on workshop. Participants will leave with specific, sentence-level strategies they can use immediately to improve student writing and with tools they can use to track improvement in student writing. This workshop is designed for teachers of all grade levels K-12 and all content areas.
- Understand how sentence-level WIT strategies work to develop writing, vocabulary and content knowledge & reading comprehension simultaneously as well as how they develop knowledge of the English language.
- Will be able to analyze English learners’ writing in order to identify high-leverage skill gaps within writing and an evidence-placed skill to focus upon first in instruction and track progress in sentence-level writing over time.
- Design 2 WIT-based high-leverage sentence level strategies to use in their instruction within their content area. These strategies will reinforce and assess students’ knowledge of essential content and reinforce & assess students’ writing in English.
